Argentina won the Copa America final 1-0 over Brazil on Sunday, ending a 28-year wait for a major international trophy at Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho (Maracanã Stadium) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Lionel Messi, the captain of Argentina, won his first major championship.

Ángel Fabián Di María scored on a long pass from Rodrigo Javier De Paul in the 23rd minute, fooling Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson Santana de Moraes. Brazil also made a valiant effort to get back into the game but was unsuccessful.

Argentina has finished second in six major finals since winning the Copa in 1993.

Argentina lost to Chile in the Copa America finals in 2015 and 2016.

The Copa America title has brought great relief to Messi, who is on the verge of breaking into an international football career.
